The People’s National Convention says the decision by the Institute of Economic Affairs to ostracize its flagbearer from Wednesday’s Presidential debate is unfair. The General Secretary of the party Bernard Mornah told Joy News the party is completely disappointed in the IEA for the decision they have taken. The Administrator of IEA Jeane Mensah in announcing the rescheduling of the second presidential debate to Wednesday stated, the PNC leader Hassan Ayariga will not be part of the debate. She explained the decision was taken following what she described as the bastardisation of the IEA platform by the PNC flagbearer. Ayariga pulled out of the debate in honour of the late vice president Aliu Mahama. He also stated he was sick of malaria and will not make it to the debate. He is also reported to have said that even if he recovers on time he will not take part in the debate. Jeane Mensah said the comments by the PNC flagbearer had been taken seriously by the IEA. She added they have decided to organise the debate on Wednesday, but Hassan Ayariga will not be part of it. But Bernard Mornah said the IEA has been highly unfair in its treatment of the PNC. Whilst conceding that his flagbearer erred in taking a unilateral decision not to attend the debate which was initially supposed to be held on Tuesday, November 20, 2012, he added the reaction by the IEA was harsh. He wondered if it was the same IEA that re-admitted the governing NDC for the 2012 debate after the party had officially announced they were not going to take part in the debate with some of the officials attacking the integrity of the IEA. According to him, the IEA had to plead with the PNC to get the NDC on board the debate. If a similar thing had happened with the PNC, Mornah asked why the party committee on the debate was not contacted before the decision was made. He said the action taken by the IEA indicates that it respects some parties more than others, insisting the PNC will now know how it will relate with the IEA.
