Two presidential candidates, Hassan Ayariga of the People’s National Convention and Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party are accusing the police of failing to provide security for their campaigns.
The accusations come only days after the PNC leader was trailed by four persons said to be armed robbers.
The four were later arrested by the police who retrieved a fully loaded pump action gun and 10 cartridges from the Mitsubishi Pajero vehicle with registration number GR 8849 R which the suspected robbers were using.
The Upper West Regional Police Commander DCOP Kofi Danso Adai Acheampong, who confirmed the arrest to Joy News said they had begun investigations into the matter.
But Hassan Ayariga believes the incident would not have happened if he had been provided with adequate security.
According to him, he requested for police protection for his campaign two months ago and was assured of four policemen but not even one had been provided.
Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom also expressed similar frustrations.
He told Joy News, unlike 2008 where he was provided with two policemen to protect him during his campaign, this year his request had been ignored been ignored.
“I know that in 2008, I was given two police officers officially by the Ghana police service and they were very helpful in helping us control the crowd and helping us with disciplinary activities around us and ensuring we are safe and sound.
“…We do not understand the situation where this year, the PPP had even written officially to the Ghana Police Service to ask for police support, like having police officers be part of our team as we traveled around the country. But that request was denied.
“What they said to us is that wherever we go, we should ask for police assistance,” he explained.
He described that arrangement as cumbersome.
