The Police have expressed disappointment at the unprofessional conduct of an attendant to an emergency call placed by the Editor of the Daily Dispatch newspaper during a fire outbreak at his residence on Monday.
Though there were no injuries or deaths a lot of property was destroyed before the Fire Service managed to eventually bring the fire under control.
Mr. Ephson told Joy News on the night of the incident the operator he reached on a police emergency line was unhelpful.
“We called the 192, the line was not working. So I called the police, 18555 and said can you call for us the 192 that the house was burning and he said the 192 does not work and that he was going to give me a land line to call. And I said can you please call them and tell them a house is burning at New Achimota, he said I should call my self," he said.
According to Ephson even after telling the attendant he did not have credit, he (attendant) asked him to find credit and call.
He said a few friends were able to reach the fire service who came with a fire tender to put out the fire but the harm had already been done.
The police has described the incident as a one-off incident that is not common with those trained to operate at the center.
Acting Director of Police Public Affairs, DSP Cephas Arthur however added that the administration is launching a re-activation of all their emergency lines tomorrow to make them more efficient.
In a related development, the Ghana National Fire Service is advising the public to use land marks in their area to give direction during emergencies especially because many streets and houses are still not numbered.
