Police have increased scrutiny of both commercial and private drivers across the country's major roads, to check increasing road crashes.

The exercise, which is being led by Police Commanders is currently taking place on the Accra-Winneba, Accra-Kumasi and Accra-Ho roads.

The top hierarchy of the police say they are hoping to understand what causes tincreasing road accidents on some major highways and ensure decrease of such incidents.

The country has recorded more than 3,000 road accidents in the first quarter of 2014– blamed usually on neglect of traffic regulations and other offences by drivers.

As at May this year, Ghana Road Safety Commission put the figure of deaths from road accidents at 520 out of a total of 3,512 accidents nationwide between January and April.

The Commission, which is responsible for road safety education also said 3,301 people sustained various degrees of injury from road accidents in the same period.

The Greater Accra Region recorded the highest number of accidents with 1,336, while the Upper East Region recorded the lowest with 35 cases, the Commission said.

As part of the ongoing road safety exercise, Police have so far impounded 30 private and commercial vehicles on the Accra-Kumasi highway for various offences.

The Accra-Kumasi exercise, led by Ashanti Regional Commander, DCOP Kofi Boakye, saw the arrest of a medical doctor alleged to be driving under the influence of alcohol.

Luv FM reporter, Erastus Asare Donkor said 39-year-old Dr Alfred Nyarko, who was driving a Toyota SUV recorded 0.18 units instead of 0.08 units on the breathalyser.

Police say they would be processing Dr Nyarko for court in due course, reports Erastus.

COP Joana Osei Poku who was undertaking the special road safety operation on the Tema Motorway told Joy News Monday, the Police with the help of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) are trying to check indiscipline especially on the road.

She said drivers are stopped at random to check for worn-out tires, driving without requisite licences among others.

Regarding how often the exercise will go on, COP Poku said "as often as we can and randomly".
