The Police Administration has released the vehicles it seized from National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Organiser, Kofi Adams after it established they do not belong to the state.

PRO of Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID), ASP Joseph Benefo Darkwah told Evans Mensah, host of Joy FM's Newsnite programme Thursday that the five vehicles belonging to the NDC functionary have been driven out of their premises.

"We have done with our investigation and we have released the vehicles to Mr Kofi Adams," he said.

The five vehicles of Mr Adams were seized by some operatives of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) under the pretext that they belong to the state. They were sent to the Police CID to investigate if they were state properties.

The Campaign Coordinator of erstwhile President John Mahama 2016 Campaign was displeased with the incident. He assembled his team of lawyers who wrote to Inspector of General of Police (IGP), David Apeatu demanding some explanations.

Unfazed, the police insisted the investigation was relevant to put to rest the issue about the ownership of those vehicles.

ASP Benefo Darkwah explained the esssence of the investigation was to establish the ownership of the vehicles and to find out if they were state-owned.

But lead counsel for Mr Adams, Samson Lardy Anyenini says the content of their letter to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Apeatu and others who matter remains relevant as their instructions were clear. 

He said the evidence he saw before taking the case is what has verdict his client to have the seized vehicles returned. 

Sometime last week, Mr Anyenini challenged the state to arrest and prosecute his client if they think he stole the vehicles from the state.

He described the police’s continuous detention of Kofi Adams vehicles which are said to have been stolen from the state is the most lawless act by the state.

"It ought to be made clear that our client is not a criminal in any criminal process, we are unaware of any judicial or quasi-judicial process that is ongoing for which the said vehicles," he said, "for our client to be taken through such a laughable process."    

In the petition written February 8 to David Asante Apeatu, Mr Anyenini narrated what lead to the vehicles ending up at the police station.

"Sir, the said vehicles (5) which are a matter of public knowledge, were wrongfully and unlawfully removed from our client's Golf City residence in Tema on Wednesday, February 1, 2017, in a style and fashion reminiscent of excesses of the country's dark past of unconstitutional rule.

"The group of men who engaged in the said unconstitutional conduct, criminal trespass, and violation in the face of our client's guaranteed rights to privacy and property, have since been identified and understood to have acted on the unlawful instructions of state actors," the petition said. 

Upon release of the vehicles' Mr Anyenini said the documentation they presented were "just too enormous to have any other different conclusion. The police took their time; they went to the Customs, Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and all their checks have vindicated him. 

The NDC National Organiser has since driven his vehicles home.
