The New Patriotic Party Youth Group, Young Patriot has backed down on its threats to go demonstration Tomorrow, Tuesday January 8, 2012.
This follows a court order secured by the Ghana Police Service.
The police administration said with the demonstration just a day after the inauguration of President John Mahama, personnel will be over stressed and therefore suggested to the group to postpone the upcoming demonstration against the EC's declaration of John Mahama as winner of the 2012 polls.
But the organizers said the reasons being given by the police were untenable and vowed to hit the streets.
The police, however went to court, Monday to secure the order to restrain the organizers from embarking on the demonstration.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Freeman Tettey told Joy News the order has been duly served on the organizers and they have no choice but to respect the court order.
“With this restraining order, which has been duly served on them, it will be an illegality if the group goes ahead to carry out the demonstration or to lead the demonstration,” he said.
He added the order was not an indefinite one and that the group could engage the police after January 9 for the demonstration to be held.
He counseled all to respect the laws of the land, insisting “the police have no intention of stopping people from embarking on lawful demonstration. What the police are seeking for, is full compliance of the provisions of the Public Order Act.”
Leader of the Young Patriots, Hopeson Addoye in an interview with Joy News said they will respect the court's decision.
He said the only means to stop them from embarking on demonstration was to secure a court order and once they (Police) have done that, the organizers of the demonstration will oblige.
Addoye said the Patriots will organize the biggest ever demonstration which will rival the kumi-preko demonstration.
“It is going to be massive. We are considering bringing members from all over the region. It is going to be one of the greatest and massive demonstration that Greater Accra will ever witness,” he stated.
He said the organizers are however yet to set a date for the demonstration but it will be after the 9th of January.
