The Progressive Peoples’ Party says it lost heavily in the 2012 general elections because the leading political parties in the country bought the votes of the electorates who would have ordinarily voted for the PPP. The party is unhappy there were no checks on the NPP and NDC to ensure the elections were fair. It’s National Chairman Nii Allotey Brew-Hammond made this known at the party’s inaugural meeting with parliamentary candidates. He told Joy News though they are disappointed at the outcome of the elections, they would put everything behind them to enable the party to forge ahead for the 2016 elections. “What turned the voter away from the PPP has been the act of buying their votes. There is evidence everywhere you turn voters were given televisions, voters were given laptops at the University of Ghana. Voters at Odododiodoo people were given match boxes that were stocked with GH¢50 notes. They accepted our message but the money we couldn’t sustain.” He called on the Electoral Commission to be firm and demand sources of funding for political parties – their income and expenditure. “We believe that we are strong but others are using unethical methods to win,” Brew-Hammond asserted. He said the PPP will continue with their advocate for reform in the Ghanaian political system.
