Three students from Ghana were among the top prize winners of the 2024 West African Examinations Council (WAEC) International Excellence Award, alongside a student from Liberia.
The awardees are David Nii Commey Ankrah, Henschel Tabi Frempong-Manso, and Benedict Ofori Debrah.
David Nii Commey shared the first-place position with the Liberian student, while Henschel and Benedict secured second and third places, respectively.
These students were part of over 1 million candidates who sat for the 2024 WASSCE across The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.
The announcement was made during the 73rd Annual Council Meeting of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), which took place from 17 to 21 March 2025 in Monrovia, where the region’s top academic achievers were celebrated.
Benedict Ofori Debrah earned A1 grades in all eight subjects, placing him among the top three out of 2,455,063 candidates across The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.
He is currently pursuing a BSc in Human Biology at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). The alumnus of Presbyterian Boys' Secondary School was honoured alongside second-place winner Henschel Tabi Frempong-Manso from Kade Senior High Technical School, who also achieved straight A1s and now studies at KNUST.
The awards recognise outstanding achievement in the WASSCE, a significant milestone for students in West Africa.
Debrah's success highlights the reputation of Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School for producing high-calibre talent, with the young scholar attributing his achievement to the rigorous academic environment at his alma mater.
Now enrolled at KNUST, a university renowned for attracting the brightest minds in the region, Debrah is already focusing on his future in human biology.
