The moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Reverend Professor Emmanuel Martey, has called on politicians to be circumspect in their campaign tours and refrain from politics of insults. Rather they should be imbued by the love for the ordinary person and for the nation, during their campaign tours. “Every respectable politician has a name to protect and should therefore, never even try to undermine the reputation of other politicians with false allegations, fabrications and insults,” he admonished. Speaking at the opening of the 11th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana at Abetifi over the weekend, Rt. Rev. Martey said politicians should ensure that the 2012 election is devoid of violence. The six-day General Assembly, which had the theme: ‘Holy Spirit and The Believer’, brought together the clergy from all the Presbyterian churches in Ghana and beyond as well as political and traditional leaders from the Eastern Region to assess and discuss the success and challenges facing the Presbyterian Church. Rt. Rev Martey added that journalists, would also be playing a positive role in the governance of the country during the election, “if they do not just dwell on sleazy reports with the aim of undermining the reputation of persons in the society.” “Definitely, the violence among foot-soldiers and supporters of political parties would be avoided if journalists gave Ghanaians the journalism that it deserves,” he stressed. He reiterated that journalists who ignored fundamental values which define human dignity such as integrity, honesty and respect for social values were not contributed to the building of true democracy in the country. Rt. Rev. Martey said that “the life blood of democracy is good journalism” and therefore, urged journalists to practice it to enrich the daily lives of the citizens and enable them to play their roles in the democracy of the country, properly. He congratulated political parties for their successful congresses and internal elections and, also, wished other political parties who are yet to hold theirs, successful congresses.
