President John Evans Atta Mills was on Thursday 13th October, 2011, honoured for defending Christianity and the Word of God wherever he finds himself.
The award, dubbed, the “Defender of the Faith”, was an award given to chiefs in the 16th century, who defended Christianity, according to the organizers.
The organizer of the awards, Bishop Prince Benny Wood of Benny Wood International Ministry, said President Mills has made two speeches which portrayed that he has the heart of God.
One was a statement attributed to him to the extent that, he would turn the seat of government, the Osu Castle, into a Church should he have his way. He is also reported to have said that he was “elected by God through the people of Ghana”.
The award was received on behalf of President Mills by the Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, at the State of the Church Symposium organized by the Benny Wood International Ministry in Accra.
Other recipients were Apostolic Church of Ghana, Assemblies of God and Methodist Church of Ghana.
The Deputy Minister was worried about the continuous negative frontpage stories about pastors which he noted, is denting the image of the Church and the clergy. He called on pastors to address indecent dressing in the churches.
The Founder of Benny Wood International Ministry, Bishop Prince Benny Wood, called Churches to unite to be able to deal effectively against evil forces that are rising against the church.
Bishop Benny Wood expressed gratitude to Anator Holdings Company Limited and Multimedia Group Limited for their support toward the programme.
