Professor Mrs Miranda Greenstreet, a member of the National African Peer Review Mechanism Governing Council (NAPRM-GC), has charged members of the APRM District Oversight Committee to be independent in monitoring the implementation of the APRM process. She explained that this was the only way by which they could assess the process and come out with findings that were neither biased nor against institutions involved with the process. Prof. Greenstreet was speaking at the inauguration of the Ga West District Oversight Committee (DOC) of the APRM in Amasaman, near Accra. She said Ghana had come a long way in the implementation of the National Programme of Action (NPoA), a list of points identified in the country review exercise, which the government had undertaken to do to meet the collective development goals outlined in the New Partnership For Africa's Development (NEPAD) document. Prof. Greenstreet said the APRM District Oversight Committee concept was developed to meet the growing need for the NAPRM-GC to cover the entire country adequately in the monitoring and evaluating the APRM process. She charged the committees, which are the representative organs of the APRM, to exhibit neutrality, openness, all-inclusiveness and non-partisan tenets as demonstrated by the national council in the entire process. The Governing Council is the independent body charged with the management of Ghana's participation in the APRM process. Prof. Greenstreet said one of the key pillars of the APRM was about the involvement of the people in governance. "The APRM is a people-driven process," she said, adding that governments would change, but if the people owned the process, it would become one of the most useful development tools for the country.
