The Member of Parliament for Mion, Misbahu Mahama Adams, has urged Ghanaians to take collective action to protect the environment and address the growing threat of climate change as Muslims across the country observe the holy month of Ramadan.
Delivering a statement in Parliament, the lawmaker said the intense heat currently being experienced in parts of Northern Ghana highlights the urgent need for stronger environmental protection measures and climate resilience.
He noted that the ongoing heatwave serves as a clear reminder of the real and increasing impact of climate change on communities, livelihoods, and public health.
Mr Adams observed that while Muslims are engaged in fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection during Ramadan, many residents in northern parts of the country are also coping with unusually high temperatures that make daily activities and fasting more challenging.
He stressed that such conditions underscore the importance of sustained environmental stewardship and decisive action to safeguard the natural environment.
The MP emphasised that caring for the environment is both a civic and moral responsibility. He explained that Islamic teachings encourage environmental preservation, noting that the Prophet Muhammad promoted tree planting and responsible stewardship of nature.
According to him, acts that benefit people, animals, and the environment are regarded in Islam as acts of charity.
Mr Adams therefore called on Parliament, government agencies, civil society organisations, and communities to intensify conservation efforts, including tree planting and sustainable land management practices.
He said such initiatives would help mitigate the effects of climate change while improving livelihoods and protecting vulnerable communities from extreme weather conditions.
He also used the opportunity to extend Ramadan greetings to Muslims across Ghana and encouraged them to observe the period with devotion, compassion, and mindfulness of their health. He advised those fasting to take precautions to avoid dehydration and heat-related illnesses during the current heatwave.
The MP recommended that Muslims ensure adequate hydration between Iftar and Suhoor, limit prolonged exposure to the sun, and avoid strenuous activities during peak heat periods.
He also encouraged the consumption of nutritious meals, including fruits and water-rich foods, to help maintain energy levels throughout the fasting period.
Mr Adams further urged citizens to use the Ramadan season as a moment for reflection on humanity’s relationship with the environment and to commit to sustainable practices that protect the earth. He stressed that safeguarding the environment is vital for securing a healthy and sustainable future for generations to come.
