Former President Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings (rtd) is in Abuja, Nigeria where he is Special Guest of Honour at the General Assembly of the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa Congress.
The former President is expected to deliver the keynote address at the official opening ceremony on Saturday, March 6.
UCLGA is an association of villages, towns, city councils and local government associations founded to accelerate development in Africa. It is the umbrella body of local governments in Africa aimed at integrating African municipalities into mainstream initiatives of the world municipal movement.
Ag. Nigerian President Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan will attend Saturday’s event after which he will hold a private meeting with former President Rawlings.
The President of Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, Hon Ibrahim Dasuki Jalo-Waziri, Dr Zephaniah B. Jisalo Executive Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council and the Minister of Interior Affairs of Nigeria Dr. Alhaji Shetima Mustapha will also address the conference.
There will also be public lectures on urbanisation and local government.
