Ghana’s former President, Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings on Sunday joined family, friends and well-wishers at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, Kyebi, to mourn the loss of Mr. S. S. Omane former Inspector of General of Police, who was laid to rest last Saturday.
President Rawlings in a statement at the thanksgiving service described Mr. Omane as an officer who helped to restore integrity in Ghana during the early days of the revolution.
The former President later visited the residence of the deceased where he laid a wreath at his burial site and interacted with family and friends including former First Lady Faustina Acheampong and the children of the late former IGP.
In a tribute by President Rawlings and his wife Nana Konadu, Mr. Omane was described as a man who “represented a generation who believed in discipline, a high level of respectability and integrity.
“He was bold, decent, strong, a team player and never hesitant to instil discipline.”

The couple said: “The sense of commitment and Mr. Omane’s own willingness to serve his country once more convinced my colleagues and I to appoint him as a Special Duties Officer to the then IGP, R.K. Kugblenu. He was subsequently appointed IGP upon Mr. Kugblenu’s retirement in 1984.
“Mr. Omane helped to restore command and control. His name was as tall as a kite and he stood out as someone who left a mark even in the most trying periods of our nation’s history. He performed creditably when he was appointed Inspector General and left office with his integrity intact,” the eulogy stated.
Mr. Omane who was IGP between March 1984 and June 1986 passed away on September 11, 2014.
