The referee of Bayer Leverkusen’s clash with Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga was so fed up with the behaviour of the home team he ran to hide in the tunnel.
Leverkusen were incensed that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s opener for Dortmund was allowed to stand, with coach Roger Schmidt sent to the stands for his protests.
However, Schmidt refused the order – and what followed left everyone in the stadium bewildered.
Referee Felix Zwayer suddenly suspended the match and dashed into the tunnel, leaving a bunch of perplexed players and staff huddled in the dugout area.
Here's how it unfolded:
It took ages for the farce to simmer down, with Zwayer eventually ending his one-man protest after eight minutes – and only after some gentle coercion from Germany legend Rudi Voller, who was spotted in the stadium confines.
Aubameyang’s strike proved decisive as Dortmund emerged with a 1-0 win to reduce Bayern Munich's lead in the title race to eight points.
