Rescue workers searching for illegal miners trapped in a pit in Obuasi say they have given up hope of finding any survivors. It has been three days since the illegal miners got trapped underground at AngloGold Ashanti’s mining concession. At least fifteen people are feared dead even though officials of the mining company are not sure of the exact number of the victims. Two bodies have been retrieved already. Anglogold Ashanti’s General Manager in charge of Human Resources, Yiadom Boakye Amponsah says even though the rescue team has identified where the victims are trapped, the narrow entrance to the pit has frustrated the rescue effort. He said the strategy to get to the victims would be to excavate the abandoned pit.
