Residents of Alavanyo and Nkonya say the curfew imposed on them by government is frustrating their preparations for Christmas.
The frustrated residents want the curfew hours to be reviewed.
Speaking to Joy News’ Ivy Setordjie, some residents of both towns expressed their dissatisfaction and unhappiness with the current situation.
The towns of Nkonya and Alavanyo were placed under curfew following violent clashes over land. The curfew hours were in December changed from 6pm to 6am daily, to 4pm to 8am following an escalated violence. Security presence in the two towns is high in an attempt to quell further violence.
But residents say the presence of military and the curfew are not enough to resolve the situation.
They insist that despite the stationing of soldiers in the main towns, people are still being attacked when they go to their farms.
“The military is here but people are still being shot and so I don’t know what they are doing here,” one resident said.
According to them, until the true ownership of the disputed land is determined, there will be no peace in the area.
Listen to the residents on the military below:
Residents bemoaned their inability to prepare adequately for the Christmas holidays, saying they do not feel safe despite the military presence.
They say they are unable to make preparations because “We have to be on the alert” and that “we are in a perceived war.”
The reduced hours of the day mean that they are unable to complete their business and chores and they are not looking forward to the effect on their festivities.
They thus called for a review of the curfew hours and for authorities to find a lasting solution to the situation.
