The Rlg Foundation extended its charity arm to inmates of the Weija Leprosarium in Accra with the donation of quantity of food items and clothing.
The donation was part of activities marking this year’s World Leprosy Day which fell on 30th January every year.
World Leprosy Day is observed internationally on 30th January or the Sunday closest to that date as a day dedicated by the World Health Organization (WHO) to create awareness about leprosy, its curable nature as well as whip up public support for persons either living with it or cured of the disease.
In most societies, there is high stigma against leprosy infected persons in spite of proven assurance by medical personnel that the disease is curable.
This is the first time the Rlg Foundation is celebrating the Day.
Presenting the items to the Leprosarium, the Foundation Manager, Mr. Frazier Appeadu Malcolm indicated that the health and welfare of the inmates were paramount to the Foundation hence the donation. He appealed to Ghanaians not to shun or stigmatize lepers or people with leprosy but rather show them care and affection since the disease is curable.
He said the support to the Leprosarium is in line with one of the focus areas of the Foundation which is Health and Wellness.
Receiving the items, Madam Gladys Adubea, the Home Prefect commended the Foundation for the donation. She prayed for the company to achieve more successes so they can share with the needy and underprivileged in the society.
She assured the Foundation that some of the items particularly the T-Shirts will be sent to some of the other Leprosaria in the country.
She lauded government and all benefactors of the facility who assist Rev. Fr. Andrew Campbell to man the Leprosarium.
The Weija Leprosarium is a home to cured lepers and has nurses who take care of them.
Ms. Francisca Selorm, a nurse at the facility presented a ’thank you card’ on behalf of the Lepers Aid Committee.
The Committee under the Chairmanship of Rev. Fr. Andrew Campbell also supports Ho, Nkanchina, Kokofu, Anindado and Ahontokrom Leprosaria.
Present at the short ceremony were some of the cured lepers, Mrs. Victoria Dadzie, a nurse and Ms. Donna, a volunteer from Canada.
