A 21-year-old Meridian pre-University student, Mas-Ud Wallid Iddrisu, who posed as Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan in order to dupe a US-based lady, has been arrested on Thursday.
The Meridian pre-University student, who is also a resident of Tema Community 1, succeeded in chatting-up a US-based Ghanaian lady, posing as Gyan on social media (Facebook).
Upon suspicion, the lady in question went a step further by contacting the Al-Ain striker’s foundation office in Adabraka, Accra, for verification.
It emerged from the inquiries that Iddrisu was impersonating the Black Stars striker, so she agreed to send the ‘striker’ an amount of GH¢20,000 which was due for collection at a Barclays Bank branch in Tema.
The Asamoah Gyan Foundation office alerted L/Cpl Tijani Adam of the Accra Regional Criminal Investigative Department (CID), who effected the arrest with perfection when the victim appeared to withdraw the cash at the bank.
Iddrisu is the second person in recent months to have posed as the Black Stars captain over a social media scam.
Meanwhile the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Gyan Foundation, Samuel Anim Addo says they have had to take action because there have been too many of these cases in recent times.
"There are about five women in the US who have been swindled, four in the UK and three in Canada in the same manner. These are the ones I am privy to and have their contacts and have made reports on it already" he said
"These acts destroy the good image of our stars and we must do well to stop it as a nation," he added.
Early this week news emerged on facebook that Asmaoah Gyan had bought a private jet and pictures were all over facebook. This scam has become a lucrative business for many young people in the capital and we call authorities in charge to act now..
