The Chief Justice, Mrs Justice Georgina Wood, has directed an Appeal Court-judge to sit as an additional High Court judge on a day-to-day basis to ensure the expeditious disposal of an outstanding case regarding the ownership of a piece of land in dispute at the Achimota School area.The case involves a suit (number IRL 52/10), filed on December 7, 2009, for which an injunction was granted on January 25,2010 restraining the two parties - Netlynk Estates Limited and 44 others and Beatrice P. Adorn and others from further construction work or demolition of structures on the disputed land.A statement signed by the Director of Communications of the Judicial Service and issued in Accra last Saturday expressed the hope that both parties and their counsel would co-operate with the court to ensure the expeditious disposal of the case.The directive by the Chief Justice follows public concern and comments made in the media in respect of Achimota School lands and the imminent closure of the school as a result of the breakdown of its sewerage system due to the activities of developers at an area popularly called "The Folly".The statement by the Judicial Service recalled that in September 2007, eight suits were filed in the courts, at the instance of Achimota School, against various developers in respect of the school's land.It said as of the end of November 2008, judgement had been delivered in seven of the cases, all in favour of Achimota School, adding that "so far, no appeal is pending".The statement indicated that the only case pending was the one whose expeditious disposal had made the Chief Justice to direct an Appeal Court Judge to sit on.Achimota School has been in the news recently following a decision by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to close down the school in view of the health hazard posed by the school's leaking sewerage system which has been attributed to the activities of real estate developers in the area.Source: Daily Graphic/Ghana
