Springfield Exploration and Production (SEP) Limited and its partners, Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and GNPC EXPLORCO, have completed the appraisal well test activity for the Afina discovery.
This accomplishment reinforces Springfield’s position as the first independent Ghanaian and African energy company to operate a deep-water asset and make a hydrocarbon discovery.
The Afina-1x well, originally drilled in 2019, is located at a water depth of 1,030 meters and reaches a total depth of 4,085 meters.
The well uncovered a 65-meter-thick light oil reservoir, with 50 meters of net oil pay in high-quality Cenomanian sandstone formations.
Additionally, 10 meters of gas and condensate-bearing sands were identified in Turonian-age formations at the structure’s edge.
The recent Drill Stem Test (DST) on the Cenomanian sandstone confirmed promising production capabilities, with a maximum flow rate of 4,500 barrels of oil per day (bopd).
Pressure transient analysis indicated reservoir pressure depletion since 2019, reflecting active production within the reservoir.
Further, a mini-DST on the Turonian sandstone affirmed the presence of gas and condensate, estimating a flow rate potential of up to 12,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd).
Pressure levels for this reservoir matched those recorded in 2019, further confirming its stability and reliability.
The appraisal program concluded with the release of the Deepsea Bollsta rig on November 22, 2024. The rig departed Ghanaian waters the following day, marking the successful end of the operation.
Kevin Okyere, CEO of Springfield, expressed his satisfaction with the appraisal program’s outcome:
“We are extremely happy with the results of the appraisal program, which has further confirmed our understanding of our geological, geophysical, reservoir models and demonstrated our operational capacity.
"Afina-1x is a vertical well; we are confident that a horizontal well or other well completion options that maximise reservoir exposure in the fields would deliver much higher production rates.
"This provides an incredible platform for reaffirming commercial development options for the Cenomanian and Turonian reservoirs.”
He also thanked the Springfield team, the Northern Ocean’s Deepsea Bollsta crew, and other service partners for completing the activity safely and on schedule.
This achievement underscores Springfield’s dedication to pioneering advancements in Ghana’s energy sector while reinforcing its ability to contribute significantly to the nation’s hydrocarbon potential.
