The President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonu, has issued a stern warning to the management of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to refrain from selling its hotels.
According to Mr Carbonu, the management of SSNIT will be surprised by the Association's response if they do not reconsider their decision to sell four of its hotels.
Speaking on Top Story on Tuesday, Mr Carbonu said, “If the management of SSNIT becomes intransigent in this matter, some of us will move a motion at the platform of Organised Labour, and I can assure you they will be surprised by the outcome.”
His comment follows the concerns raised by Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who in May revealed details of the deal and questioned why SSNIT would sell 60% of its stake in the hotels to a minister of state.
Despite a petition to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to halt the sale, the Ghana Federation of Labour has alleged that SSNIT is proceeding with talks to sell its stake in four hotels to Rock City Hotel, owned by the Minister of Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.
The hotels in question are Labadi Beach Hotel, La Palm Beach Hotel, Royal Ridge Hotel, and Busua Beach Hotel.
On the back of this, Mr Carbonu emphasised that SSNIT belongs to the workers of Ghana and that it is their contributions that have built SSNIT.
He clarified that SSNIT does not belong to a clique of politicians, arguing that Ghanaians should have fought for a change in the governance structure of SSNIT.
“If they become intransigent, some of us will move a motion at Organised Labour that we would have to sleep - occupy SSNIT premises until such a time that they see reason to do the right thing,” the NAGRAT President added.
