The Volta Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) wants to express its deep concern about police assault last Sunday on Mr Victor Kwawukume, a journalist working for the Daily Graphic and the GJA Chairman for the Region.
We are utterly dismayed at the physical violence visited on Mr Kwawukume who was performing lawful duty and call on the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to set up an independent body to investigate the matter.
The fact that the police could attack a journalist on duty in broad daylight is a great worry to us and danger to media freedom.
We cannot understand what crime he may have committed by taking shots of police action in the public view.
This year being an election year, we believe the police must be very responsible in its duty to protect and defend the rights of innocent civilians including journalists.
We strongly condemn the incivility and hope a thorough investigation will be conducted and people found culpable brought to book.
