The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has advised authorities of the University of Ghana (UG) and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to stop blaming them for the non-accredited status of some of the programmes they run.

The two schools were cited by the Auditor-General for running programmes without accreditation and were advised to do the needful.

Out of 360 programmes run by the KNUST, only 61 are accredited, while the University of Ghana has 374 of its programmes unaccredited.

However, the two educational institutions claim they have applied for renewal but GTEC’s administration lapses have delayed the accreditation.

Reacting to these claims, GTEC’s Director General, Professor Mohammed Salifu stressed that his outfit is not to blame.

“The universities have been summoned to the Accreditation Committee of the Commission. The excuses that are being given are not the excuses that were given here. Some of the programmes, the accreditation elapsed as far back as 2014/2015.

“It is not acceptable, how is it that you can blame issues on GTEC. They should stop the blame game, we have engaged them several times. So let’s stop the blame game and deal with the issues,” he stressed.

Professor Mohammed Salifu has meanwhile explained that although the two public universities have taken steps to rectify the situation, there will still be sanctions for the schools.
