A 23-year-old second year University of Ghana student, Senyo Akpene Kojo was nearly lynched in the early hours of February 3, 2008 near ‘Pillar two’ at Dome. Narrating his story to Joy News’ Dzifa Bampoe, he said he left home early on that day around 4:00am and travelled to the area to collect a ‘pen drive’ from a friend. He said around 5:40am when he got to the area he saw two women on their way, and he greeted and asked them for direction to the town. He said the women upon hearing his voice shouted, “Jesus! thief, thief!”, and suddenly four men from nearby houses came out. He said the men asked him what he was doing to the women, and he told them he was only asking for directions, but the men retorted that he was lying, claiming his intension was to snatch the ladies’ bags, he said. Despite his explanations, they started hitting him with stones, sticks and any object they could lay their hands on. He said the number grew to about 30 people as he was being beaten till he felt weak and unable to stand on his feet. Senyo said, he was saved by a man who came over and pleaded with the crowd to stop beating him. He said he walked to the Kwabenya Police Station, which was not too far from the spot where he was nearly killed to lodge a complaint. At the Police Station, he said the men on duty told him he should go and treat himself and come back because at that time only two of them were on duty and they couldn’t do much to help him. He said he later returned to the Police Station with his uncle, and the Police again said there were only two of them on duty and therefore they could not go with them to effect arrests. According to Senyo he went with his uncle and another man to the area and he was able to identify one of the men who attacked him and they arrested and sent him to the police. But he said the police have released the accused on bail, saying that they could not pursue the matter because Senyo has no evidence against him, and should the case go to court the accused could not be prosecuted. Senyo therefore, has decided to give up on the case.
