Local contractors to be engaged under the STX housing project will have to undergo training on the technology to be used. The Western Forms building technology involves the use of prefabricated concrete slabs reinforced with aluminum. Officials explain the technology will significantly enhance the speed of the project. Norm Burkhart who is with the Business Development Unit of Western Forms for Africa and the Middle East led a team to Ghana recently to have talks with local collaborators for the project. He explained the training for the local contractors is key because the technology is quite alien to Ghana. The system, he argued, “is very strong, very resistant to earthquakes, impossible for insects to get through, fire resistant and will last – we expect – well over 200 years.” The first phase of the project involves the construction of 30 thousand housing units for mainly personnel of the security forces.
