Officers of the Ministries Police Station in Accra, yesterday had the shock of their lives when a 20-year-old yam seller, who was under investigation for using a counterfeit GH¢50 note, stole the investigator's purse. Briefing the Times, ASP Albert Fil Ochil, the District Police Commander, said the suspect, Kwesi Anthony, was arrested and placed in cells for buying second-hand clothing with a counterfeit GH¢50 note at the Tema Station Lorry Park on Wednesday. He said yesterday, Anthony was brought out of the cell to be interrogated by Inspector Olivia Ajavor, and while the interrogation was going on, she received a call on her phone. He said in the process of receiving the call, she left her purse containing GH¢95.00 on her desk and returned only to discover that it was no longer on the table. Mr. Ochil said the investigator combed everywhere for the purse but could not find it. In her desperation, it dawned on her that Anthony was the only person who was around when she had the call. Anthony was then brought out of the cell and when asked if he had seen the purse he denied seeing it, but one of the cell mates informed Ms. Adjavor that Anthony had requested someone to buy "banku" for him even though he did not carry any money on him when he was placed in cells on Wednesday. Based on this information, the investigator decided to conduct a body search on him and, it was detected that he had stolen the purse and kept it in his underwear. The purse was retrieved from him and he was placed back into the cells. Anthony would be taken to court and charged with the offences. Source: Ghanaian Times
