A security guard’s rags to riches story is being ruined by attempts by authorities at the Takoradi Polytechnic where he works to retrieve monies they say was wrongly paid into his bank account.
32-year old Ebenezer Okyere, whose basic salary is Ghc 400 thought he had hit a jackpot after he discovered Ghc 12,000 in his bank account in June.
He did not waste time in putting it to some good use and bought himself a vehicle to be used as a taxi only to be told he has to refund the money.
He is however unwilling to return the monies, at least not to the school authorities because he suspects they intend to keep the money at the blind side of the government paymaster, the Controller and Accountant General.
Radio Maxx’s Ebenezer Afenyi-Dadzie reported that, a KIA Shuma taxi cab Mr. Okyere purchased had been impounded by the polytechnic authorities.
Mr. Okyere said he got the car for Ghc 9,900 and used the rest to process the documentation.
He said he does not know exactly how much he would have to return to the school if indeed he had to make a refund.
When contacted, the Head of Public Relations at the office of the Controller and Accountant General’s Department in Accra expressed surprise at the Polytechnic’s action.
He however refused to comment further except to say that the matter is being investigated.
