Members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the Yilo Krobo District of the Eastern Region, have staged a massive demonstration against the security agencies and the District Assembly for not exhibiting commitment in curbing the mysterious disappearance of Taxi Drivers in the area.
The drivers claim three of their colleagues disappeared while they were going about their normal duties but the police and the District Chief Executive have not made any effort towards investigating and bringing the culprits to book.
The branch Chairman Mr. Eric Awatey said, on 20th June, 2011, one Tetteh Addo a driver of Kia Pride taxi cab with registration number GE 7314-09 went t o drop an unknown passenger and never returned till date.

He further stated that, what seems to have broken the camel’s back is the latest disappearance of another driver Joseph Odonkor driver of Kia Pride with registration number GN 9618-11.
He noted that, drivers in Somanya are leaving in fears as they do not know who will be next. He attributed the sudden disappearance of the members to the influx of spiritualists in and around the municipality and a group of young guys driving luxurious cars popularly called ‘Sakawa Boys’.

Mr. Eric Awatey reiterated that, the “Sakawa Boys” have taken over the Somanya Township and are splashing money all over the town.
