Tech Thursday: Building Autonomous Underwater Vehicles with recycled materials

A Ghanaian team has used recycled materials to build a robot that monitors underwater activities.

The Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) normally cost close to $70,000 to manufacture but without external funding, the team is building one using basic materials and technology.

AUVs are useful in three key areas; security especially military applications and operations, commercial offshore activities especially for oil and gas production and general scientific development.

The Ghana National Petroleum Commission had promised financial support to the Ghanaian team but they have yet to make good on that promise.

Even though the team seem more thrilled now to explore this power generation module further for standby power to hospitals in rural Ghana, they are not oblivious that a win in the XPRIZE competition means not only a validation of its low-cost module.

It needs $7 million for further development of this tech solution and a bragging right for both the University of Energy and Natural Resources and Ghana as a whole.
