Fio Richardson Commey, the Director of Policy Planning, Research, Monitoring and Evaluation at the National Commission on Culture (NCC) has expressed worry about the how adult content on TikTok is affecting Ghanaian children.
He told Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM's Showbiz A-Z that the NCC has conducted a research into the effect of TikTok on Ghanaian children and have submitted their recommendations to the Review Committee of the Cultural Policy.
He said the research proved TikTok is having a negative effect on children in Ghana.
Dr. Commey hope their recommendation will help sanitise the cyberspace in Ghana.
“We’ve a proposal to the current team that is working on the new cultural policy that we need a clear guide on our media and cyberspace in this country. We really need a clear guide as South Africa and other countries in Africa are doing.
We need a very good and robust digital space that will be able to make sure that if I pick a phone or my father buys me a phone and there is a need to input my particulars, my date of birth and everything in, automatically I should be restricted from certain sites based on the age I put there. And I think it is done in other jurisdictions so you see young people with iPhones and all that, perhaps it is only games they are playing. Because there are certain sites you may not get access to because of certain content,” he said.
His expectation is that the research recommendations will be endorsed by the Cultural Policy Review Committee and consequently be used as a guide to Ghana’s cyberspace.
He also said that the media has a role in making sure it projects Ghanaian culture so it affects national development.
Currently, a review of Ghana's Cultural Policy which was first adopted in 2004 is underway. The policy will serve as a guide to promoting Ghana's culture and arts.
