Two persons reportedly drowned in flood waters on Monday night at Aboabo, a suburb of Kumasi following a heavy downpour.Reports say the two teenage girls were among a group of head porters (kayayei) who were returning from their businesses when the disaster struck. An eyewitness told Luv FM’s Yaw Ansu-Gyeabuor that one of the girls fell into a drain while running to seek shelter. He said while observers were making efforts to rescue her, the second girl also tripped into the deep drain. The eyewitness said the powerful currents of the water made it impossible to rescue the victims. The rescuers managed to find one of the girls who was unconscious and rushed her to the hospital but she was pronounced dead on Tuesday
morning. The other girl's body, however, could not be found.Meanwhile, there are reports which say the body of a teenage girl has been found at Atonsu, also in Kumasi but it is unclear whether it is one of the two who drowned at Aboabo. One of the girls has been identified as Fuseina. The floods also destroyed property in some parts of the Kumasi metropolis.Meanwhile the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has said it is not aware of the drowning incident.
