The Upper West Command of the Ghana National Fire Service has moved to close down fuel and gas filling stations in the region which are operating without the appropriate fire safety equipment.
Speaking to the media after a random inspection of a number of stations in Wa, the regional capital, Regional Commander of the service, Assistant Chief Fire Officer, James Emmanuel Quao, said he was satisfied with the safety mechanisms at some fuel stations.
He, however, noted that some of the fuel stations need to upgrade their safety equipment in order to forestall the loss of life and property in the event of an accident.
He gave a week’s ultimatum to managers of Busa Junction gas station in Wa to fix a sprinkler pump or risk a shutdown of their facility.
The operation, according to the Assistant Chief Fire Officer, is aimed at keeping owners and attendants of fuel stations on their toes with regards to fire safety following the last month’s fatal gas explosion at La in Accra.

The accident claimed six lives and injured dozens.
