The United States Ambassador to Ghana, Madam Stephanie S. Sullivan, has inaugurated the American Corner Agbogba, a new Cultural and Educational Centre at Agbogba in the Greater Accra region.

The project is a partnership between the US Government, through the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the US Department of State, and Mobile Web Ghana.

It provides access to current and reliable information about the United States through book collections, internet access, and events and activities for everyone.

The American Corner’s four computing stations, reading and workspace room, and book collection are available to the public, for everyone to enjoy, connect, and learn.  

Access to the American Corner collection and programmes is free and open to all.

Madam Sullivan reiterated the purpose and importance of the newly inaugurated American Corner, saying, “A significant aspect of US foreign policy, and a cornerstone of my leadership of the US Embassy in Ghana, is investing in people.

American Spaces empower individuals, especially, future leaders, the young women and men of Ghana, to face the challenges of today and to build a brighter tomorrow.”

She said the American Corner Agbobga was one of more than 600 American Spaces located around the world and “builds on the more than $12 million that the US Department of State through ECA had committed worldwide to the American Spaces programme.”

The Ambassador noted that American Spaces were inviting, free to the public, learning and gathering spaces that promoted interaction among local communities and the United States, where individuals could learn more about the US and its higher education, and their exchange programme opportunities, in addition to fostering life-long learning.

Chief Executive Officer of Mobile Web Ghana, Madam Florence Toffa, said Mobile Web Ghana’s vision was to empower the youth to develop mobile and web applications and open data solutions to solve local problems.

She said the American Corner was going to be an awesome opportunity for knowledge seekers to gain access to resources and book collection that would satisfy their thirst for knowledge.

The US Embassy partnered with Mobile Web Ghana, a technology and entrepreneurship hub, to establish American Corner Agbobga as a place for innovation, networking, and information sharing.

The space also provides internet access, computers, books and other resources, and hosts interesting speakers and activities.

Programme topics included coding, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education for women and girls, media literacy, and entrepreneurship.  

American Corner Agbogba is open to the public from Monday to Friday from 9:00am hours to 5:00 pm, except on local holidays.
