An environmental activist, Michael Yao Tomfeah has called on Ghanaians to use the 50th anniversary celebration of the country’s independence to champion the fight against the wanton destruction of the environment.
“At 50, Ghanaians must learn to correct their past mistakes. Burning of bushes for hunting or for farming should be a fairy tale for posterity. Let us get actively involve in avoiding the setting of all types of bushfires. Bushfires are not only dangerous to the environment and wildlife, but also threatens human lives and property,” he said.
Mr Tomfeah, who is the Head of the German-based environmental non-governmental organisation- Afrika Wiederaufforstungsverein e.v. said the country was losing a number of plants with medicinal values through indiscriminate burning of the forest.
He asked all stakeholders in the protection of the environment such as chiefs, Environmental Protection Agency, Ghana National Fire Service, the Police and NGO’s to help educate people especially against bush burning and implement laws that makes the practice an offence.
Mr Tomfeah suggested the need for every village to get fire brigades, who should carry out sustainable education on the environment and create fire defence belts in every community.
