Vice President John Mahama, has observed that most women who die from breast cancer, often report their condition to the hospital when the situation has become very acute.
He blamed this on the tendency of such victims to resort to herbal and spiritual treatment, instead of seeking orthodox care.
Mr Mahama warns that Ghana risks more deaths from breast cancer, if such an attitude to the disease persists.
Addressing thousands of people after a breast cancer awareness walk in Kumasi, the Vice President who was scheduled to travel to Addis Ababa for the African Union special session on Libya, said he decided to delay his trip because of the seriousness government attaches to health issues.
The Susan Komen Race for Cure, is organized annually to draw attention to breast cancer and aims at educating women on the dangers of the disease which is said to kill one woman every 69 seconds the world over.
The walk which started from the Centre for National Culture, and ended at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium attracted ministers of state, women groups and some schools.
The Vice President called for regular breast examination for early detection and cure of the disease.
He added: "The figure of half a million people dying from breast cancer globally is frightening, but most often people resort to traditional medicine when they develop signs of the disease. Traditional medicine is good, but it has its limits and I therefore urge our women to seek care from health professionals, because breast cancer can be cured if detected early".
