Vice President John Dramani Mahama on Monday played host to an unusual guest at the Castle, Osu.
Nutifafa Kwame Adzoe, a teacher at the Agotime Afegame E.P. Primary had apparently walked from Ho, the Volta Regional capital, to the seat of government to honour the Vice President for helping in the release of Daniel Baidoo who was serving a 25-year jail term at the Jedidah maximum security prison in Tripoli, Libya.
Vice President during a visit to Libya recently sought clemency for Baidoo who was incarcerated for spreading the gospel, an unlawful conduct in the largely Muslim dominated northern African nation.
An elated Mr Adzoe, who was granted audience by the Vice President, said he was touched about the personal involvement of the Vice President in seeking Mr Baidoo’s release and pleaded with him to continue along that line.
Responding, Vice President Mahama said it was duty of the government to seek the welfare of all Ghanaians regardless of their creed or affiliation.
He said President Mills’ governance ethos was that it should be the duty of state officials to take care of all citizens, adding that the clemency sought for Mr Baidoo and the recent negotiations over 60 Ghanaian truck drivers who were seized by Nigerien authorities were done along that line.
Vice President Mahama said although it was typical for people in high authority to gloss over issue affecting ordinary citizens, it was the avowed aim of the Mills’ government not to shy away from such issues.
The Vice President secured Baidoo’s release during a three-day visit to Libya, where he pleaded with the Libyan leader, Colonel Muammar Qathafi, for the release of Baidoo.
