The Board of the Volta River Authority (VRA) Resettlement Trust Fund has handed over a five-unit nurses quarters to the Botoku community. The project which was funded by the Authority at a cost of GH¢68,000 is to cater for the health needs of workers who accept postings to the areas. Speaking at the inauguration of the houses, the Board Chairman, Andrew Tontoh Barfour, said the fund was to help improve the living conditions of the inhabitants of the 52 resettlement townships provided as a result of the construction of the Akosombo Dam in the early 1960s adding that the Trust since its inception, had executed 45 projects. He said out of a total of GH¢650,000 spent on the projects, GH¢ 174,350 was disbursed in the Volta Region. Mr. Barfour was hopeful that the provision of the nurses’ quarters would attract more nurses to the station and enhance health care delivery in the area. The Volta Regional Minister, Mr. Henry Ford Kamel, said the provision of the health needs of citizens was not for the government alone but a shared responsibility. He asked the community to consider, the facility as a national asset and their own. Mr. Kamel urged the Municipal Assembly to factor the facility into its budget to ensure its maintenance and assured of government’s continuous support for the area. The Member of Parliament for the area, Ms. Akua Sena Dansua, also the Minister of Tourism, who initiated the projects, commended the VRA for the numerous supports to the area. She called on other Botoku citizens to contribute their quota towards the development of the area. Togbe Tampia IV, chief of Botoku, was grateful to government and the VRA for the facilities and assured that the facility would be put to good use for the benefit of the people.
