Traders in Wa are angry with city authorities for the poor management of waste generated at the main central market.
According to them, the stench from the choked gutters is becoming unbearable forcing customers to buy elsewhere.
This loss of customers is greatly affecting the businesses of traders those who deal in perishable goods. They also alleged that though a waste management company has been assigned to the clean up the area, its staff are almost always absent from duty.
JOY FM’s Rafik Salam who visited the market said the traders fear the poor sanitation could engender the outbreak of an epidemic as the rains set in.
An interview with a tomato seller revealed that the cleaners assigned to manage waste the market center, were nowhere to be found on Sundays. This she added, usually leads to a buildup of waste as market activities go on irrespective of whichever day of the week it is.
The Wa Municipal Environmental Health Officer, Henry Abanga concedes the problem is getting out of hand. He is however optimistic it will be addressed if the Assembly completes its long term plan for the market.
