The Wa district police command has arrested the police officer who allegedly shot a 23-year-old civilian for riding an unregistered motorbike.

Constable Frank Kpenge is currently in custody assisting with investigation Deputy Regional Police Commander, ACP Edward Oduro Kwarteng said at a press conference Wednesday.

The shooting of Ali Rashid, a teacher, triggered widespread anger amongst the youth in Wa.

The incensed youth then went on rampage attacking other police men and destroying properties owned by the police and the military.

A police man, Corporal James Kuofa was attacked and nearly lynched by the angry youth.

At the press conference, ACP Oduro Kwarteng said the rifle of the suspect went off hitting the abdomen of the victim who subsequently reported the case to the police.

The victim has since been treated and discharged from the hospital.

According to Kwarteng, the second police man, Koufa who was attacked at the Commercial Bank has also been treated and discharged after the mob attack.

He called on the youth to exercise restraint and remain calm in the face of the unfortunate incident.

Joy News' Upper West Regional correspondent Rafiq Salam reported the police as saying they will treat the suspect like any other person arrested for similar offences.

He said residents are not happy with what transpired over the last couple of days.

Meanwhile, the Upper West Imam has cautioned police men and others not to take the peaceful nature of the people of Wa for granted.

His threat is in reaction to the insults and ethnocentric comments made against the people of Wa by another police woman this week.

Believe Amedzro who appeared to have issues with her posting to the Upper West Region decided to vent on facebook, making unguarded remarks about residents in the area and describing, the Region as "hell", too hot for comfort.

The IGP has summoned the officer and has since apologised for her misconduct.

Spokesperson of the Imam, Alhaji Baba Daud said the Imam, has accepted the apology in humility and in good faith but warned the people of Wa should not be taken for granted.
