The strike by medical doctors across public hospitals in the country is set to worsen as the stalemate deepens.

Representatives of Government and the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) met Sunday over proposals for doctors’ conditions of service, but reports indicate talks broke down.

Although there were earlier reports that the GMA had abandoned the meeting, the Association’s President, Dr Poku Edusei told Joy News that the claims were false.

He said GMA withdrew Government’s counter proposal on service conditions for doctors.

"We are going to give government an opportunity again and meet Parliament again. It is not true that we abandoned negotiation.

"Personal attacks and all those things don't move us. We are resolved - all doctors - to make sure that we have a signed and sealed conditions of service document and this we stand by," he stated.

"We did not swear an oath of poverty," he said, insisting that their fight is for posterity and for making sure sanity prevails in our country.

"We need a signed and sealed condition of service document and we will go back to work."

His comments come after the negotiations turned rancorous last week when the GMA accused the government side of bad faith after their proposal was leaked to the media.

This week another document purportedly from the government side emerged with claims that government has accepted some demands and rejected others.

There has yet to be any official confirmation.

Public hospitals across the country have been abandoned by doctors who are pushing for better conditions of service.

They have threatened to resign from the by August 14 if their demands are not met, a move that will certainly cause chaos in the health sector.
