Leading member of the NPP, Prof. Mike Oquaye has said, his party will be going to court within the time period allowed by the constitution to prove that a consistent pattern of electoral fraud occurred at certain polling stations. The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said the NPP is building up a reputation of crying foul after losing elections. But on Multi TV’s current affairs program pm: EXPRESS, Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament Prof. Mike Oquaye attacked that claim, saying, “if there should be any sanity in the electoral system, the NPP should be congratulated because the foul was a real foul and the New Patriotic Party should be congratulated for opening up the electoral process”. Prof. Oquaye argued that Ghanaians have been voting even before independence and that never before have there been such widespread reports of ballot paper spoilage as seen in this year's election. At the polls this year, there were in excess of over 250,000 spoilt ballots, which he said could have tipped the election’s outcome in either party’s favor. He therefore implored the Electoral Commission (EC) to carefully examine the current trend of ballot paper spoilage so that the sovereign will of the Ghanaian people ultimately prevails. Prof. Oquaye pledged to continue pursuing the legal path to contest results so that after the court action, there can be no doubt who won and who lost. He said that his party’s figures showed that Nana Akufo-Addo would have won but for widespread fraud. President Mahama, he said, should be disqualified, and this disqualification should be effected by a court of competent jurisdiction. He told host Stephen Anti that although the NPP is in the minority in Parliament, they will not be perturbed in the event the Supreme Court rules in favour of NPP and reverses the EC’s declaration, making Nana Akufo-Addo president. He cited the National Health Insurance and school feeding programs as evidence that the NPP always had the people of Ghana in mind. In the event that Nana Akufo-Addo becomes president, Prof. Oquaye warned that the majority will be kicking itself in the teeth if it deliberately tries to frustrate government policies brought before the house. He is confident that the NPP will win the case it is yet to file at the Supreme Court to prove that the election results are not credible.
