Security expert, Adam Bonaa has called on the two MPs who have filed a petition at the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) asking for investigations into the deaths that occurred during the 2020 polls to withdraw the case.

According to him, the petition should be sent to Parliament instead of CHRAJ because the government body has the power to ensure the case is investigated and perpetrators punished.

Speaking on Top Story, he stated that CHRAJ in times past have failed to get justice for victims abused by security agencies stating that this case like others will not produce a good result.

“CHRAJ itself is incapacitated. Soldiers are on record to have beaten some young persons in the Northern Region. JoyNews catalogued a lot of these incidents of brutality meted out by officers. It was sent to CHRAJ and it is still investigating how many years down the line? Some of these people are still alive with permanent injuries.

“I am expecting the MPs who have petitioned CHRAJ to withdraw this petition, go back, redo their work and ensure those who were part of this criminality or part of what happened are investigated and if possible prosecuted. This petition to CHRAJ is to kill the case,” he explained.

Two legislators – Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, North Tongu MP and Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah who is the MP for Ellembelle, have petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) asking that it investigates the deaths that occurred during the 2020 polls.

The petition is lodged against the Ministers of Interior and Defence, the Inspector General of the Ghana Police Service and the Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The petition borders mainly on events that happened at the Techiman South, Odododiodio, Ablekuma Central and Savelugu constituencies.

The MPs alleged that personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces did not conduct themselves in ways that promoted the development of the nation during the polls. Their conduct, the legislators argue, rather caused damage to life and property.

They explained that CHRAJ has the mandate under Article 218 of the 1992 constitution to investigate violations of fundamental human rights, abuses of power, injustice and unfair treatment.

However, Mr Bonaa believes that with the 137/137 split between the NPP and NDC in Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah have a better chance of seeking justice for the victims.

“The law is there but if they don’t have the resources to fast track some of these cases, investigate them, then I don’t know what this petition would do,” he added.
