After a harrowing brush with death, 33-year-old Grace Akosua Samoah is channeling her near-tragic experience into a powerful mission as a road safety advocate.
Her goal is to inspire others to speak up if they sense something amiss in their vehicles.
In an interview with JoyNews, Grace recounted the events of March 15, 2021, when she received a call from a friend asking for her help—leading to the unexpected incident.
“It was on a Monday and I had a call from a friend that I should go and help her. She had a baby, the mother was sick and no one was around. I packed my things and set off. That was the day, the very day the thing happened,” she said.
Grace recalled how the negligence of their inexperienced driver led to a tragic accident.
“I was seated at the back, so I saw him dozing off and then speeding at the same time. I prompted him and he took the mirror off from where I could see him.
“He was overtaking another car with speed and then the tire busted so he couldn't control and then the car somersaulted which resulted in killing six people,” Grace recounted.
She added that she might have been left to die in the nearby bushes if not for the intervention of a passer-by who found her and rushed her to the hospital.
“I learnt I was thrown inside the bush somewhere, nobody even saw me. They took all the casualties, the dead and everybody to the hospital and everybody that came around left but it took someone that was going to urinate to see me,” she recalled.
Grace further shared that funding her surgeries has been an uphill battle, with no one stepping in to assist her.
“Nobody, as at now, I don't have anything I'm looking at,” she said.
Despite enduring multiple surgeries, with more to come, Grace is slowly regaining her confidence. Now, she is determined to use her voice to protect others and prevent similar tragedies.
“I want to, I would like to and I've been talking to the Road Safety Commission to meet their board members and they have taken it up. They want to help come in and make sure I go on social media.
“I just want the road users to just - they should add their voices to it, they should speak up if anything is not going on right on the road because even when I told the driver he was sleeping, nobody said anything. They were just looking on,” Grace added.
