The family of a 31 year old woman in Sunyani in whose stomach doctors mistakenly left a piece of abdominal towel after a caesarian section at the Brong Ahafo Regional Hospital is demanding justice.

The towel stayed in her stomach for two months before it was detected. She has been rendered barren as a result of the situation.

Ernestina Konadu Adade, for the past two years, has been trekking the Sunyani High Court hoping to get justice but to no avail.

She now wants the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection to intervene.

Ernestina Konadu Adade underwent the caesarean section on the 7th of October, 2010 at the Brong Ahafo Regional Hospital, a procedure which not only failed to save the life of her first child but has left her dejected and in perpetual agony.

Ernestina has yet to get over her physical and psychological trauma. Over 2 months after the caesarean section, Ernestina’s stomach would not recede.

All complaints made to the regional hospital authorities did not yield much. She told Joy News she was rather put on some pain-killers, until she decided to seek help elsewhere.

According to a medical report, physical examination indicated a mass in the abdomen after which a surgical operation: an exploratory laparotomy was carried out which revealed an abdominal towel surrounded with pus in the abdomen, it was removed and the cavity washed.

Ernestina has since not been the same. She’s been rendered sterile, physically atrophied, and has lost her job.

Her only hope for justice was the law court; seeking a Gh150,000.00 compensation, but it’s been two years since. Ernestina is distraught.

She tells Kuuku “this operation has done a lot of damage to me; I’m always sick. I was not like this. Now I can’t do anything. I’m now like a child but more importantly, my womb which has been damaged is my biggest pain, and this is even affecting my marriage. For 2 years, I’ve been trekking the courts for justice, but the case is always adjourned.”

Father of the victim, Ofori Amanfo is livid by the development and is thus appealing to CHRAJ and the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection to intervene.

Managers of the Regional Hospital when contacted declined to comment.
