Scores of civilians, believed to be home owners, attacked security personnel detailed to give protection to the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA)officials undertaking a demolition exercise at Lashibi near Tema on Tuesday morning.
In spite of the resistance, the exercise went on as planned and over 100 houses were pulled down.
According to the residents, they were not notified before the demolition exercise and were therefore bent on stopping it, which resulted in the firing of gunshots by the security personnel whilst the residents also threw some offensive weapons.
A resident who spoke to Joy News described the confrontation between the civilians and security as a ”serious fight”. Meanwhile, there has not been any report of injury.
Joy News Moses Kanga, who visited the scene minutes after the exercise, said some residents were able to salvage their property.
”Tension in the area is high,” he reported.
But the TMA says residents who think their structures were illegally pulled down should go to court.
