The Manhyia Palace has officially announced the death of 111-year-old queenmother of Asanteman, Nana Afia Kobi who reigned for 39 years.
An emergency meeting was held this Thursday to enable nananom convey their condolence to the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
In a statement signed by Kofi Badu Chief of Staff of Manhyia Palace Thursday, it said, "Manhyia announces with profound sorrow the passing to her eternal village of Nana Afia Kobi Serwa Ampem II, the Asantehemaa and mother of His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. She was 111."
The late Nana Afia Kobi was enstooled in 1977 as the 13th queenmother of the Asante Kingdom since 1695 after the late Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko II who reigned from 1945 to 1977.
She saw the reign of the late Otumfuo Opoku Ware II, as Asantehene who reigned from 1970 to 1999.
The late queenmother who passed away in her sleep on Monday was "the pillar of strength and source of wisdom behind the transformational reign of His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II," the statement added.
The Manhyia Palace will perform her one week rites on November 24 in accordance with Asante custom and traditions.
It has, therefore, placed a ban on all funerals, drumming and noise making throughout the Asanteman kingdom until the funeral of the late queenmother has been performed.
