A Tema-bound articulated truck Sunday dawn crashed into the Beposo toll bridge on the Accra- Takoradi highway resulting in the death of two people.
The dead were identified as Tanko Moro, the driver of the truck and Thomas Gpoku the ticket officer at the toll booth.
The Ghanaian Times on arrival at the scene at 10.30 a.m. saw parts of the vehicle scattered all over on the road.
Briefing the Times, the Western Regional Co-ordinator of the National Road Safety Commission, Thomas Bismark Boakye, said the accident occurred at 3.15 a.m. when the truck, with registration No. GR2301A, loaded with empty containers and driven by Moro, was heading towards the Tema harbour.
He said reports indicated that when the truck arrived at the Ntwaban police barrier, the policemen on duty allowed it to cross because of the high speed.
Mr Boakye said the policemen at the Assorku Assaman stretch of the Accra- Takoradi road were alerted to stop the driver but could not do so until he crashed into the toll bridge at Beposo.
"The ticket officer on the Takoradi side of the toll bridge, saw the danger coming and ran away but Thomas who was on the Accra side could not see the truck coming and was crushed to death," he told the Times.
Asked what could have been the cause of the accident, Mr Boakye said, "it is the speeding; he could not control the vehicle and therefore hit the toll bridge."
The Regional Commander of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTIU), Deputy Superintendent of Police Daniel Dzakpah, said there would have been more causalities if the hawkers had been around.
The bodies of the two have been conveyed to the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital morgue while investigations continue.
