A former lawmaker for the Zebilla Constituency, John Ndebugre, has served notice it is unconstitutional for Ghana to be without a Vice-President 48 hours after swearing in a new President following the demise of President John Evans Atta Mills.
The former Member of Parliament is arguing that the Executive arm of government is breaching aspects of the 1992 Constitution two clear days after appointing and swearing in John Mahama as Mills’ successor.
Former President Mills died on Tuesday afternoon at the 37 Military Hospital after a short ailment.
Drawing inspiration from Article 60 of the Constitution, Mr. Ndebugre discounted arguments that the supreme law of the land is silent on the length of time for the appointment of a Vice-President, adding that the current situation ought to be addressed urgently.
But a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team, Abraham Amaliba, sharply rebutted the assertions, arguing that the former legislator has gotten his interpretation all wrong.
