The fourth edition of the Africa Wiki Challenge (AWC), scheduled to take place from May 25 to June 30, is expected to spotlight Africa in the vast online information space. As we embrace the digital age, we
Participants from across the continent are encouraged to join in the initiative by writing new articles or improving existing ones related to Africa on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.
Alongside written content, participants can also contribute by uploading photos that accurately depict African culture, landmarks and people.
“We aim to expand and enrich the knowledge about Africa across the web, with a special focus on Wikimedia and its sister projects,” Eugene Masiku, communication Officer, Open Foundation West Africa said.
He said that Africa, despite its rich cultural diversity, history, and vast resources, is often underrepresented in the digital sphere, receiving less attention than it deserves.
He pointed out that compared to other continents, Africa's online presence is relatively limited, particularly on platforms like Wikipedia, where its wealth of knowledge and experiences are not adequately reflected, resulting in a significant gap in the digital landscape.
“In April 2024, African content comprised merely 2.69% of the total 4,815,057 articles on Wikipedia. Presently, African contributors constitute only 1.91% of the 185,723 active contributors across the platform.
"Many of Africa's stories either go untold or are inaccurately portrayed. This begs the question: Who will share our story if we don't?” he asked.
Mr Masiku explained that the Open Foundation West Africa launched the Africa Wiki Challenge (AWC) in 2021 to address the online knowledge gap about Africa, adding that, the initiative aligns with the African Union's Agenda 2063 and its flagship project, Encyclopedia Africana.
Since its inception, he stated, the AWC has successfully engaged participants from over 30 African countries, including Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon, among others, promoting the creation and sharing of African content online.
“This has resulted in the engagement of 891 editors, the development of 158,117 new articles, and 9,952 edits on already-existing articles.
"The Africa Wiki Challenge presents a unique opportunity to bridge the content gap about Africa on the web, with Wikipedia as our primary target, given its status as one of the most visited online encyclopedias,” Mr Masiku indicated.
This year's Africa Wiki Challenge, supported by the African Union, adopts the theme "Educate Africa: Nurturing Minds for the 21st Century," which harmonises with the African Union's theme for African Union Day, "The Year of Education - Educate an African Fit for the 21st Century."
This alignment emphasizes the importance of education in empowering Africa's future generations and fostering a continent-wide knowledge hub.
The challenge comes with prizes with the winner receiving GH¢10,000 and the second and third prizes receiving GH¢6,000 and GH¢3,500.
The top female contributors will also receive GH¢4,000 while the best photo upload on wikimedia commons will receive four thousand cedis GH¢4,000.
Potential participants are encouraged to visit the campaign's landing page to register their participation.
